Day 26: The Bundle Strategy

Clearly, I love a group project 😉.

Gathering a bunch of people or organizations to all work towards a common goal is kinda my thing.

You may have noticed be it The Freebie Extravaganza I've hosted in the past or the Black Friday Bundle for Nonprofits

Both things are incredible list builders because it's bringing people with similar audiences together to offer new people something super valuable.

Here's how you do it:

🛠️ How to build a bundle

 Step 1: Brainstorm.

What do your current and potential subscribers want? What would help them solve a problem, learn or save them time?

For example, maybe your ideal subscriber is someone who recently rescued a new puppy.

They need to know all the things:

  • How to teach the dog to sit

  • How to teach the dog to stay

  • How teach the dog to walk on a leash

  • How to make homemade food or treats

…you get the idea.

What if you reached out to 4-5 other nonprofit dog rescues where each person contributed something to include in a bundle that all of your ideal subscribers might want.

 Let's do another example.

You're a nonprofit whose ideal subscriber is a mom with kids 12 and under in the home. Summer is approaching and she is looking to keep the kids busy and stimulated, but doesn't have a ton of time to research all of the things.

What if you reached out to 4-5 nonprofits to deliver: The Ideal Summer Bucket List* that includes things like:

  • A reading challenge

  • A how-to make 3-ingredient ice-cream in a bag

  • A coloring book

  • A STEM experiment using household items

  • A daily affirmation playlist for when things get hard

…you get the idea.

*This is the kind of brainstorming and creative we come up with on behalf of our clients. We take the guesswork out of what's working!

Step 2: Once you have the name of your bundle—you'll need to set up your opt-in page. Need an example? This is what I used for the Freebie Extravaganza:

Step 3: Build your marketing materials.

To make sharing easy, I like to create graphics and social media copy that I send to my fellow contributors.

Step 4: Set up a confirmation email with the bundle items inside.

Once someone signs up for the bundle, they should automatically receive an email that includes the links to the various bundle items with instructions on how to use it.

 Step 5: Promote, promote, promote!

I like to set a goal and then update the contributors along the way.

Step 6: Decide how you will share the email addresses with your fellow contributors.

 🚨 This is important

One way you can share the list of people who opt-in is by sharing the entire list. If you do this, you will want to make sure you have a disclaimer letting people know that they are signing up for all four to five email lists.

Another way (my preference) is to let people pick and choose what items inside the bundle they want and what list(s) they want to be added to. This ensures people are actively opt-ing in to where they want to be. If you go this route, this would mean you'd share various opt-in links in the confirmation email vs. the items.

💡 Why it works

People like a good deal so the idea of opting in to one thing, but getting a bunch of valuable items is really enticing!

📊 Results

The bundles I've run have added anywhere from 400-1,000+ subscribers to my email list.

🧰 Tools Needed

  • Your opt-in

  • Graphics and copy to share with your contributors

  • A confirmation email

🗣️ Last thought

This is a combo method of freebies + leaning on other people's audiences.

 A double-whammy!

What do you think? Would you ever try hosting a bundle?
