Day 22: Guest Post In Other Newsletters

On Day 19, I talked about leaning on other people's audiences through promotions of a shared event.

Today, I want to talk about the same concept, but in newsletters.

Do you have a nonprofit you're friends with who does similar, but different work?

For example maybe your a baby supply distribution nonprofit who wants to partner with an environmental organization for Earth Day featuring sustainable products and items.

Or maybe you're a homeless services organization who wants to partner with a workforce development organization, but you need volunteers to practice job interviews.

To take it a step further—it doesn't have to be a nonprofit.

One of the best examples I've seen in the wild was when Charity:Water partnered with Pantone on “the colors of dirty water”. Pantone announced the partnership across their website, email list and social channels highlighting Charity:Water.

Whatever it is—I wish more nonprofits would partner up—and use newsletters to help them.

Here's how you can get your nonprofit in front of other newsletter audiences:

🛠️ How to guest post in other newsletters

 Step 1: Brainstorm.

What type of email newsletter subscribers do you want to get your nonprofit in front of? And which nonprofits and companies can help you achieve that?

Step 2: Who do you know who you can reach out to ask about a guest post or partnership possible? LinkedIn can be a helpful tool to see who you know (or 2nd and 3rd degree connections) and where they work.

Step 3: Reach out with a compelling offer.

Sending a message with “Hey will you let me guest post in your newsletter” isn't going to cut it.

You need to explain why partnership is advantageous for both you and them

Pro tip: You can (and should) offer to do a swap—they post in their newsletter about you and you post about their nonprofit in your newsletter.

Looking for other organizations to do a cross promotion? Make sure you fill in your info here!

Step 4: Provide an image, copy and the links you want shared so that whoever you partner with can just copy and paste

 Share 5: Share, share, share!

If it's a success, you can either reach out to additional partners OR plan to work with the same partner(s) throughout the year.

💡 Why it works

People who read newsletters tend to read other newsletters which is why cross promotion in newsletters is a great way to find new subscribers.

📊 Results

Dylan, a creator in the newsletter space recently tracked his cross promotions and saw nearly 400 new subscribers over a two month period.

🗣️ Last thought

Cross promotions—whichever way you do them—are such an underutilized strategy.

In a world where “asking” feels hard (at least for me)—I say give it a go.
