Day 1: Using Every Inch Of Your Digital Real Estate
➡️ Using every inch of your digital real estate.
When I first start working with a new client—I always audit how easy it is for people to find and sign up for their nonprofit's email list.
99% of the time there is an opportunity to maximize what I call the “forgotten space”—space people see and interact with all the time, but that you aren't using.
Here are some examples of places you may not have thought of to encourage people to subscribe:
Your email signature
Your LinkedIn profile
Your website footer
🛠️ Putting your digital real estate to work
Maximizing your email signature
Below is a screenshot of the signature in my email from my Gmail account. You’ll see—it links to a quiz that requires the person to input their email address to receive the quiz results.
Does your email signature have room to add a link that adds folks to your nonprofit’s email list?
It doesn't have to be a quiz—maybe it's an upcoming virtual event, a freebie, or a petition.
Using your LinkedIn Profile
In this screenshot of my LinkedIn page header, you’ll see a blue link that says “Learn to grow your newsletter? ↗️” that links to an email opt-in page.
Your LinkedIn profile can do the same.
Maximizing your website's footer
You'd be surprised at how many nonprofit email websites make finding an opt-in page more difficult than finding a needle in a haystack.
When it comes to email opt-ins—you want it to be eassssyyy.
Here is a screenshot of my client Inner's Spark's footer on their homepage. Clean, simple, easy. Zero guessing.
💡 Why it works
Using up all of your digital real estate is the definition of working smarter, not harder. It allows you to grow your email list 24/7 without doing any manual work.
It's my favorite kind of system—the one that is always running.
You set it up—and let it do it's thing.
📊 Results
While using every inch of your digital real estate probably won't grow your nonprofit's email list by the 1000s overnight—small numbers add up.
Let's say just 8 people find your nonprofit's email list through maximizing your digital real estate each week.
That's 416 new subscribers who will be added to your nonprofit's email list in one year.
🧰 Tools Needed
You likely have everything you need to make these updates today.
A compelling opt-in to add to add to your email signature and LinkedIn profile
Your website's login to update the footer
An email service provider (Mailchimp, Kit, FloDesk, etc)
🗣️ Last thought
There are so many ways to grow an email list—some of them require a ton of energy and output while others do not.
The systems that only require one set up are what I think should be set up first. Once those are rockin' and rollin' then you can move on to things that will require more of your ongoing energy.
Like I tell all of my clients…let it be easy.
